American Zandy Mangold was the quickest overall finishing the 36-kilometre route across the desert in a time of 4 hours 10 minutes. German Angela Zeah was the quickest woman and third overall finishing in a time of 4 hours and 23 minutes. The stage started at an altitude of 3,000 metres and the athletes had to run through rock fields, canyons and wide open desert. They also had to contend with winds of up to 60 kilometres an hour with gusts of more than 80 km/hour. Japan's Yui Hirabayashi was the last to cross the finishing line in a time of 10 hours 10 minutes. Stage two of the Atacama Crossing is another 36-kilometre route that features the valley of death.
