Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem star in thriller 'mother!' Rough Cut (no reporter narration)
ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION STORY: Darren Aronofsky's horror film "mother!" about humanity's unstoppable destruction of the earth, takes viewers on a psychological thrill ride to the apocalypse. "It's very much a scary film. It's very much a film that we want to shake audiences," said Aronofsky on Wednesday (September 13) while promoting the film. "You have to be ready to go on a trip like that. If you don't like going on that scary roller coaster ride in the back of the amusement park, there's a lot of other great rides." Aronofsky, known for "Black Swan" and "The Wrestler," said he was inspired by what he saw around him and his inability to do much about it: from the United States pulling out of the Paris climate deal and an iceberg melting in the Arctic to people starving, while others live in opulence. The result is an apocalyptic metaphor, rich in religious, environmental and political undertones - a result that has critics split into 'love it' or 'hate it' camps. Javier Bardem said people will draw their own conclusions. "That's what a work of art should be. You go to a museum, you see a painting and then you have something that happens to you. Either you like or you don't like it, whatever. And this is the same. You sit down and you have an experience of a movie rather than seeing something that is telling you how to feel, what to think and where to go." In the film, Jennifer Lawrence plays mother, a young wife who lives with her poet husband, played by Javier Bardem, in a secluded country house. While he is trying to overcome a serious bout of writer's block, she is busy restoring his family home. Their seemingly idyllic existence starts falling apart when unexpected guests, starting when Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer, arrive at their doorstep. "mother!" opens in the U.S. September 15.
