The Turtle Rover puts space-grade technology into the hands of consumers. Angela Moore reports.
STORY: This is the Mars Rover named Curiosity, wheeling around on Mars in search of ancient signs of life. Closer to home, a new rover is ready to explore the hard to reach areas of our own planet Earth. Young inventors from Poland have created the Turtle Rover. It is a remote-controlled mobile robot, they say can easily navigate rough terrain - while taking pictures and livestreaming video. SOUNDBITE (Polish) SZYMON DZWONCZYK, TURTLE ROVER CREATOR SAYING: "The main part of the rover is its propulsion system. So, the rover is equipped with four electric motors mounted inside the wheels to make the entire structure compact and very durable. Secondly, the rover has a full HD camera that is mounted in the front, a robotic arm that we deliver with the robot, which should resemble designs in Mars rovers, as well as bomb disposal robots." Its makers say the Turtle is light enough to be carried inside a backpack, but it's no toy. The engineers say the Turtle is waterproof and can roll through water, dust and rubble. And its robotic arm can even pick up objects weighing up to 500 grams - or about a pound. Already, they say, there are people eager to test the Turtle's technology. SOUNDBITE (Polish) SZYMON DZWONCZYK, TURTLE ROVER CREATOR SAYING: "Two of the most interesting applications have already been identified. The first is an Australian man who wants to use the rover to find gold on his giant plot of land. He wants to connect a metal detector to the rover and program a travel path so that when he sleeps at night, he can grow his business. The second implementation is by a group of photographers who want to take a rover to South Africa in order take photographs of animals from the shortest distance possible." The makers of the Turtle Rover say they created the little robot inside a cellar - building on what they learned as university students competing in technology challenges. Now, like its Martian cousin, the Turtle rover is ready to chart its own path into the future.
