Presented by president Florentino Perez, the French teenager, who formerly was owned by Madrid city rivals Atletico Madrid, said Atletico had treated him very well but he finally chose Los Blancos because they are the best team in the world. Hernandez had a superb season at Alaves on loan from Atletico and his signature for 30 million euros is a coup. Theo, whose brother Lucas plays for Atletico and their father Jean-Francois also turned out for the club, became the first player to cross the divide between Atletico and Real Madrid in 17 years. The France Under-20 international joined Atletico in 2008 aged 11 but never made a first team appearance for the side.
