ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) German Chancellor Angela Merkel addressed the press in Berlin on Monday (May 8), congratulating French President elect Emmanuel Macron on his 'brave' campaign. The Chancellor said she was looking forward to working with the new French leader on issues such as youth unemployment, adding "Emmanuel Macron carries the hopes of millions of French people and of many people in Germany and the whole of Europe." The centrist's emphatic victory, which also smashed the dominance of France's mainstream parties, will bring huge relief to European allies who had feared another populist upheaval to follow Britain's vote to quit the EU and Donald Trump's election as U.S. president.
