When asked about attacks on the press in the U.S., German Chancellor Angela Merkel says freedom of press is an ''essential pillar of democracy.'' Rough Cut (no reporter narration).
ROUGH CUT - SUBTITLED (NO REPORTER NARRATION) As U.S. President Donald Trump continues his attacks on the news media accusing them of being the "enemy of the American people," German Chancellor Angela Merkel voiced her support for freedom of press. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Merkel said, "I am for a free and independent press and I have high respect for journalists. We have made good experiences here in Germany with respecting each other. We discuss divergent opinions, but accept freedom of press as an essential pillar of democracy." Trump, on the campaign trail and in the White House, has repeatedly attacked the media. In a recent news conference, he branded accredited White House reporters as "dishonest people."
