Saudi Arabian budget carrier flynas will buy 80 Airbus A320neo narrow body jets and upgrade an existing order of 20 A320s to neos. David Pollard reports.
First the signatures ... then the 8.6 billion dollar handshake .... Deal done on 60 new Airbus aircraft for Saudi budget carrier flynas, upgrades to an existing order for 20 - and purchase options for 40 more. From a planemaker already celebrating sales in the region. (SOUNDBITE)(English) FOUAD ATTAR, AIRBUS MIDDLE EAST GENERAL MANAGER, SAYING: ''Flydeal they took 6 airplanes, to be delivered this year, Qatar airways, Saudi airlines they are receiving A320 this year, Saudi Gulf they have already received their A320's and many many others, I can't remember.'' Delivery will take eight years from 2018, according to Airbus. The new A320neos could make flynas one of the biggest budget fleets in the Middle East. But not unopposed - competition in flynas's primary market of Saudi Arabia is on the up. Just as this might be a new twist in Airbus and rival Boeing's struggle for an edge. Airbus's current lead now looking more secure - despite some questions over differences in the methodology each uses to count sales.
