The ''Star Wars'' prequel scored the second largest December opening in history, the second largest launch of the year, and one of the top debuts in history, opening to a massive $155 million. Bobbi Rebell reports.
Star Wars' latest installment declaring victory at the box office. "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" brought in $155 million over its first U.S. and Canada weekend- making it the second biggest December launch ever- behind only last year's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" Globally the film is closing in on earnings of almost $300 million. Disney spent $4 billion to buy "Star Wars" creator LucasFilm in 2012. Ahead of the release the company downplayed expectations, warning that it had a darker war-themed tale, and an unusually high body count relative to similar movies. But fans lined up to get to see the latest installment, with multiplexes across the country sold out. Disney is planning to do more "Rogue One" style spinoffs, including a film already in progress about the early years of Han Solo.
