Munch, Richter and de Kooning masterpieces set to fetch millions during the fall sales at Sotheby's and Christie's in New York. Rough Cut - no reporter narration.
ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: A rare Edvard Munch painting will lead the autumn art sales in New York. Sotheby's will put up for auction Munch's "Girls on the Bridge" during its sale of Impressionist and Modern art in New York on November 14. Painted in 1902, "Girls on the Bridge" is expected to sell for more than $50 million (USD). In 2012, Munch's "The Scream" broke a world auction record when it sold for $119.9 million at Sotheby's in New York. Also for sale at Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern art evening sale is a colorful Picasso called "Le Peintre et son modele". The painting shows the relationship between the artist and his model. It has a pre-sale estimate of between $12 and $18 million. Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern art sale on November 14 has 43 lots and is expected to make between $150 and $200 million dollars in total. Sotheby's Contemporary art sale is lead by two vibrant paintings by Gerhard Richter. The Richter abstracts entitled "A.B., Still" and "A.B., St. James" have presale estimates of between $20 and $30 million each. A de Kooning abstract will also hit the auction block with a price tag starting at $8 million. Sotheby's Contemporary art sale is November 17 and has 64 items for sale. Over at rival Christie's auction house, Monet's "Meule" painted in 1891 leads the Impressionist and Modern art auction with a presale estimate of $45 million. Monet's dreary painting shows reddish grainstacks under a dark orange sky. Also up for auction at Christie's Impressionist and Modern art sale are an oil and sand on canvas by Wassily Kandinsky and a portrait of Dora Maar by Pablo Picasso. Both are are expected to sell for up to $25 million. With 49 lots for sale, Christie's Impressionist and Modern art sale is expected to generate between $250 and $350 million dollars on November 15. Leading Christie's Post-War and Contemporary art sale is a bright and colorful Willem de Kooning painting called "Untitled XXV". Gerhard Richter's vibrant green and yellow "Abstraktes Bild (809-2)" comes from the collection of rock star Eric Clapton and is expected to sell for up to $25 million. And just days before the U.S. presidential election, Jonathan Horowitz's "Obama '08" resonates with portraits of 43 presidents and an empty space next to U.S. President Barack Obama. The collection could sell for up to $150,000. Christie's Post-War and Contemporary art sale has 65 lots and will be held on November 15.
