German luxury car maker Audi has opened the world's first standalone showroom dedicated to selling high-performance cars to 'exclusive' customers. Hayley Platt reports.

Even those who can afford the Audi R8's $160,000 dollar price tag, won't easily find one at their local car showroom. Unless of course you are Tom Kristensen - nine time winner of Le Mans - or you happen to live in Abu Dhabi. Audi has opened the world's first stand-alone showroom devoted solely to its high performance sports cars. The rest of the world won't have too long to wait either. (SOUNDBITE) (English) HEAD OF AUDI PERFORMANCE, STEPHAN WINKELMANN, SAYING: "We are launching 600 Audi sport shops and shop dealers worldwide by the end of '17. The Middle Eastern region is very much about performance cars, so this is the right place to open it." The Audi R8 Coupe one of its best sellers - growing by 133 percent in the Middle East alone. Globally sales of its sport brand has doubled in the last five years. (SOUNDBITE) (English) HEAD OF AUDI PERFORMANCE, STEPHAN WINKELMANN, SAYING: "But we're not looking into volume, we're looking into exclusivity. Exclusivity is what we stand for and this is by far more important." Fast cars have become a common site among the wealthy in the United Arab Emirates. And Audi's popularity is growing. In 2015 the brand sold more than 17,000 of its sports cars. That number is expected to go up a gear- with access to some of the world's most exclusive Audi's becoming that much easier.
