Former Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson says the similarities between the speeches of Melania Trump and first lady Michelle Obama show Republicans and Democrats share the same values. Rough Cut (no reporter narration).
ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Former Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson dismissed claims that Melania Trump's speech at the Republican National Convention was plagiarized. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Carson said, "I think what we should be taking away from that is both Republicans and Democrats share some of the same important values that made this into a great nation. That's something to celebrate; not to make into a great controversy." A small part of Melania Trump's speech quickly captured attention for its similarities to remarks made by first lady Michelle Obama in 2008. Referring to the values held by her family, it was strikingly similar to a section of Michelle Obama's speech to the Democratic convention in support of then presidential candidate Barack Obama. A Trump campaign official suggested the similarity was the result of an error by her speech writers.
