The Philippines confirms the execution of a Canadian man who had been held hostage by the al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf Islamist militant group since September 2015. Natasha Howitt reports.
The Philippines has confirmed the execution of Canadian national Robert Hall by the al Qaeda-linked Islamist militant group, Abu Sayyaf. The confirmation was initially sent via text message from the president's office. Hall had been held hostage on a remote southern island with three other people since September last year. (SOUNDBITE) (English) PHILIPPINE NATIONAL POLICE SPOKESPERSON, WILBEN MAYOR, SAYING: "On behalf of the Philippine National Police, we condemn in the strongest terms the beheading of a Caucasian looking male believed to be that of Canadian kidnap victim yesterday, June 13, 2016." Hall's death is the second execution of a Canadian hostage by the militant group in recent months. A Norwegian man and a Filipina woman are still being held. Abu Sayyaf is known for kidnappings, beheadings and extortion. They are based in the southern Philippines, where security is precarious.
