At least 22 people die after bus careens off the Interoceanic Highway and plunges into a river early in the morning. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
At least 22 people died in Peru after a bus driver lost control of his vehicle -- plunging it into a river outside the city of Cuzco. The accident took place around 2:30am along the Interoceanic Highway that connects Peru and neighboring Brazil. Most of the passengers were residents of Cuzco who were heading back home to vote in Sunday's presidential election, as is required by law. Bus accidents are common in Peru, where vehicle and highway maintenance is poor and roads snake along precarious mountains.
