Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer statue glows pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Illuminating the statue is one of the tactics health workers are trying to raise awareness of the disease. Honorary President of Americas Amigas, Barbara Sobel. SOUNDBITE: Honorary President of Americas Amigas, Barbara Sobel, saying (English): "In Brazil, 42 percent of the women that get breast cancer die because of late diagnosis. So we are here working to see the world without breast cancer. To try to get these women to have a mammography every year and to detect breast cancer early. You have a 95 percent chance of survival. So, this is our cause and this is why we're here." According to the World Health Organization breast cancer kills more than 500,000 women around the world each year.
