As Britain's Queen becomes the country's longest serving monarch her value to the economy is being put to the test. As Ciara Lee reports one study suggests ''The Firm'', as the royal family is often known, is now worth £57 billion while the monarchy is wealthier than ever.
Another big royal story brings the tourists to Britain. This time it's all about Queen Elizabeth as she becomes the longest serving monarch in British history - on the throne for 63 years. She's beaten Queen Victoria and the milestone has re-ignited the debate over the value of the monarchy. Brand Finance has worked it out in monetary terms. The family - sometimes known as The Firm - is worth 57 billion pounds to the UK. Robert Haigh says much of that is down to the head of the family. . (SOUNDBITE) (English) COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR, BRAND FINANCE, SAYING: "If you look at it as a business, you have to think about succession planning and whether Prince Charles will prove as successful a CEO as Elizabeth has. He is not as universally well liked as Elizabeth is but you have to look really at the whole team of the royal family I think particularly in the form of William and Kate and their children, the popularity of the royal family is only going to build." The Royals boost Britain's coffers by £1.6 billion a year, from tourism mainly but also the brand itself. (SOUNDBITE) (English) COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR, BRAND FINANCE, SAYING: "If you also look at the value of royal warrants, a huge proportion of the valuation there, particularly from demand in Asia for royally endorsed products in fashion, in sporting goods, and luxury food and that sort of thing." So does everyone in Britain think the monarchy is worth it? (SOUNDBITE) (English) UK RESIDENT, GENEVIVIE, SAYING: "I think the young ones have created their own space, William, Kate and the children. Yes I think they are. I think they are good for all of us, they're the feel good factor." (SOUNDBITE) (English) UK RESIDENT, SAYING: "I don't think we should be paying so much lip service to an inherited wealth." And that wealth is thought to be bigger than ever. Royal assets have risen to an estimated 22.8 billion pounds - partly thanks rising house and land prices. That puts the monarchy in the top 10 global rich list.
