Fancy a little cat with your cappuccino? Washington D.C.'s first cat cafe serves coffee with a cause- the adoption of rescue cats. Pavithra George reports.
STORY: If cats have nine lives, then one of them could be spent here- at Crumbs and Whiskers, Washington's first cat cafe... ...For a guaranteed supply of food, toys and the company of other like-minded cats... ...And should feline friendship prove fickle, there are always some doting humans to play with. (SOUNDBITE) (English) PHOEBE HALL, CUSTOMER, SAYING: "I was looking for some cuddles. That makes me sound lonelier than I am!" (SOUNDBITE) (English) CLIFTON YIN, CUSTOMER, SAYING: "So far, so good. I feel a little calmer already. It's been a stressful week at work, so coming here was a good idea." But it's not ALL fun and games. Inspired by similar cat cafes in Asia, owner and self-confessed cat lady Kanchan Singh started Crumbs and Whiskers as a way to introduce homeless cats to potential new owners. The cafe opened in June and already, some 20 cats have found new homes, through the cafe's tie-up with the Washington Humane Society---for Singh , it's bittersweet feeling. (SOUNDBITE) (English) KANCHAN SINGH, OWNER, CRUMBS AND WHISKERS CAFE, SAYING: "I am gonna cry, I am gonna need to be escorted out of the building when this happens, because I am not going to be able to watch it, and I am gonna cry." Tears aside, Singh hopes her cafe finds success in the nation's capital and that each of her rescue cats goes to a loving home - for one lifetime ...or even nine... of head scratches and affection.
