Christmas shopping begins in London at Selfridge's new ''Christmas Shop''. Sharon Reich reports.
Summer is still in its peak, but at London's Selfridges department store, winter is underway at the newly opened 'Christmas Shop.' Stores around the world appear to be getting their Christmas stock in earlier and earlier. Selfridge's buyer Gerladine James says the early Christmas cheer is consumer driven, and targets tourists in particular. SOUNDBITE: Gerladine James, Selfridges Christmas Home and Decorations buyer, saying: "I think a lot of people are very sentimental about Christmas and they like to look what they've done for the whole year and say 'oh, we had a lovely trip to London over the summer and this bauble reminds us of that trip." The shop already has more than 150 lights and trees and 120 different styles of crackers. As for the scrooges who might complain about Christmas in August ... SOUNDBITE: Gerladine James, Selfridges Christmas Home and Decorations buyer, saying: "I'd say to them, look the other way. Don't shop if you don't want to, and please don't be offended that we are open because actually it's just fun." The 'Christmas Shop' is due to double in size in the fall and will include other fun decorations for the home.
