Video posted on a social media website shows what activists say is the aftermath of a gas attack in the Syrian city of Aleppo. The footage appears to show civilians with breathing problems undergoing treatment at a field hospital. The target of the attack is said to be a scientific research compound recently the scene of bitter fighting between rebel groups and forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad. The footage also shows rebel fighters handing out masks at the compound. Aleppo is just 50 kilometres from the Turkish border. The city's vitally important to Assad. Losing it would further entrench a de facto partition of Syria between western areas still governed from Damascus and the rest of the country run by militia groups.
