Online pre-orders for the Apple Watch started today. Consumers' enthusiasm appears high, despite product reviews citing low battery life. Shartia Brantley reports.
. Crowds gathered inside Apple's flagship store in New York to get their hands on the much anticipated Apple Watch, but they couldn't buy it. Online pre-orders began at midnight with prices starting at $349 for the sports model. The high-end Apple Watch Edition starts at $10,000. Consumers appear enthusiastic about the smartwatch. The demos helped to decide whether it's a fit for them. SOUNDBITE: NICOLE COFFIEL, MANHATTAN RESIDENT (ENGLISH) SAYING: "The only thing I'm surprised about is, I thought the 42 millimeter would be bigger. It's actually pretty small, so I would have hoped it be bigger, but I'm glad I got to see it, I love it. I love it, I'm sold." Apple hopes consumer enthusiasm translates into sales. Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey. SOUNDBITE: JAMES MCQUIVEY, TECHNOLOGY ANALYST, FORRESTER RESEARCH (ENGLISH) SAYING: "Right now, the market worldwide is in the single digit millions. It's a very nascent market. If Apple is able to convert the 10 million consumers we expect they will by the end of 2015, Apple will have essentially have made this market grabbing two-thirds of it, even as it lifts the other players, who are actually hoping for some success for Apple, because this will be a tide that will raise all of those other smartwatch boats." REPORTER'S BRIDGE: SHARTIA BRANTLEY, REUTERS REPORTER (ENGLISH) SAYING: "Some tech reviews have been critical of Apple's watch, citing issues with its relatively short battery life. But that doesn't seem to have hurt consumer interest over Apple's first new product under CEO Tim Cook" SOUNDBITE: JAMES MCQUIVEY, TECHNOLOGY ANALYST, FORRESTER RESEARCH (ENGLISH) SAYING: "Even though they've heard the reviews about battery life isn't great, maybe you're spending a lot of money for a little functionality. They want those thoughts and feelings to fade into the background as you spend the next two weeks hearing about anticipation, hearing about hard to find an Apple Watch, maybe having to wait until July if you don't act now. They want those feelings built, and I think they will ." The Apple Watch will be available for in-store purchases starting on April 24th
