Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro declares support in a letter to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro following U.S. measures against Venezuela. Nathan Frandino reports.
In the letter read on Cuban state television, former leader Fidel Castro pledged his support for Venezualan President Nicolas Maduro who's fighting a war of words with the United States for levelling sanctions against several Venezuelan officials this week. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) CUBAN TELEVISION PRESENTER, EDUARDO MORA, READING FIDEL CASTRO'S DECLARATION, SAYING: "Dear Nicolas Maduro, President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela: I congratulate you for your brilliant and brave speech regarding the U.S. government's brutal plans. Your words will go down in history as proof that humanity can and must know the truth. Faithfully, Fidel Castro Ruz." Maduro is calling for parliament to pass an anti-imperialist law to punish the U.S. for its actions. This amid renewed efforts from Washington and Havana to improve U.S.-Cuba relations. While it's unlikely that the U.S.-Venezuelan rift will affect those efforts, state media is also reporting that Cuba would never let Venezuela stand alone. And will remain a steadfast friend standing up against a longtime foe.
