Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright cause House of Cards mania in Leicester Square at the show's new season world premiere. Holly Rubenstein reports.
From the muddy waters of Washington politics to the red carpet in London. The cast of the Netflix political thriller 'House of Cards' were in London's Leicester Square on Thursday, where the show's third season world premiere took place. Crowds got excited for actors Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright who play the ruthless power couple Francis and Claire Underwood. SOUNDBITE Actor, Kevin Spacey, saying (English): "Oh he's just an incredibly complex character, brilliantly written. I got great directors and wonderful actors to work with and it's one of the best parts I've ever had so I'm indeed a lucky man." The new season will centre around Underwood's quest to secure his position as the President of the USA. The show's writer Beau Willimon says Underwood's lack of scruples is one of the show's secrets to success. SOUNDBITE Showrunner and writer, Beau Willimon, saying (English): "Well I think all of the greatest characters are villains when you really look at them. Macbeth, Richard III, Hamlet, Iago and with Francis Underwood you see is someone you can vicariously delight in and by that I mean here's a guy that is not bound to any laws, any rules, any sort of moral compass and I think there's a part of all of us that wishes we could be liberated from all of this sometimes." It's picked up Golden Globes and Emmy's but as well as being a hit with the critics, House of Cards is also a hit in Washington, counting President Barack Obama among its fans. SOUNDBITE Showrunner and writer, Beau Willimon, saying (English): "I think what they see is that we take great pains to be as authentic as possible. We certainly have an exaggerated dark view of what power could mean. I don't think most politicians are murderers." For the power hungry with an open weekend, all 13 episodes of House of Cards Season 3 are now available on Netflix.
