German Chancellor Angela Merkel poses for photos with revellers at popular nightspots in Brisbane. Rough Cut (no reporter narration).
ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) German Chancellor Angela Merkel surprised patrons in Brisbane on Friday night (November 14), posing for 'selfies' at popular nightspots along Caxton Street. The German Chancellor mingled with revellers in the Queensland capital, where she is attending the G20 summit. In a video, filmed by Sarah Keayes, a woman can be heard saying in German "Welcome to Australia" as the Chancellor approaches. A seemingly surprised Merkel replies "Why do you know German?" before shaking hands with members of the public and posing for photos. On Saturday (November 15), Merkel said the European Union is considering further financial sanctions against Russian individuals because of the crisis in Ukraine. She told reporters at the G20 leaders summit in Brisbane that the 'present situation is not satisfying'. Merkel is due to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the summit, but said she did not expect any "sudden, qualitative changes" following the talks. The G20 summit, scheduled to focus on economic issues, has turned into a showdown between Western leaders and Putin, following fresh reports of Russian troops pouring into eastern Ukraine.
