A former pop star has topped a list of Britain's top 100 entrepreneurs. As Hayley Platt reports Victoria Beckham was praised for her ''finely tuned business acumen'' after expanding her fashion empire into a business with a £30m turnover and a staff of 100.
A former pop star. Mother of four. And wife of famous footballer David Beckham. Now, perhaps surprisingly, Victoria Beckham has been voted Britain's top entrepreneur by Management Today magazine. Graeme Moran is fashion editor at Drapers. SOUNDBITE: Graeme Moran, Fashion Editor Drapers Magazine, saying (English): "I don't think many people were expecting it but when you look at the figures from a 1 million pound turnover to 30 million pounds in five years, that's definitely a success story and I think for those people who think of Victoria Beckham as part of a power couple, as a celebrity it is a bit of a shock, but really her brand is super successful." A style icon herself, Victoria debuted her fashion lable 'eponymous' in 2008. Many thought it was just a hobby that would fizzle out. But the former Spice Girl is proving her critics wrong. She shows her collections at New York Fashion week. And last month opened her first store in London's plus Mayfair. SOUNDBITE: Victoria Beckham, Fashion Editor Drapers Magazine, saying (English): "London was always going to be where I opened my first store. I'm very proud to be British. I've spent a lot of time in London, my family's from London, I live in London and my studio is here in London." Her clothes are now sold in more than 45 countries including South Korea, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia. SOUNDBITE: Graeme Moran, Fashion Editor Drapers Magazine, saying (English): "I think everybody wanted her to not succeed and I think that has almost helped the success look even better because people didn't think she was a serious designer and in a way that makes it better because it makes it more appealing because without her lable it's still good clothing." Victoria Beckham's pop career lasted a respectable 10 years. The Spice Girls' musical barely lasted six months. The fashion world is also fickle but Victoria clearly knows a thing or too about getting what she really, really, wants.
