Breakingviews columnists discuss the planned breakup of Hewlett-Packard and what the future holds for the famed technology group.
We usually do that merger Monday this is demons of Monday very obviously Hewlett-Packard. Has decided to split up -- It's been a Littleton killings. Well yeah we're looking back the archive we first argued that they should do this in 2005. Which was then sort of unwinding the compact cars right Carly Fiorina had championed it she got booted its before Mark Hurd came in. Who was then replaced by -- -- -- up -- Tucker who then thought about it 2011 I think thought about splitting off that PC computer business. Thought he was -- we have Meg Whitman. About I guess it rob you and I wrote in his back in 2012. Arguing as to why should be breaking the company in pieces it means to an at a minimum. And and that the argument then was that some of the parts were mourning the hole and then you have the market is caught up with that right -- that's still a case. It's well it's still it's worth a little bit more if you look at the parts that whatever that part that's it's worth about 10% more than it's currently the Mark Kennedy just it took quite a bit that's -- that's because all of like he's done well in the market and if you look at HP itself moves that businesses are actually shrinking. And to actually see how profitable are very different focus they've taken me twenty restructuring charge drivers in corner -- restructuring charge so it's kind of difficult to judging how proud of this -- -- -- -- To this time and also it was work that confidence and that is the device and definitely I mean look they they they just weren't prepared for the age of mobile computing and so it. They say that you know about FaceBook when they went public. Big risk users from Obama. They were able and equipment that these guys just weren't there hardware it's just not. Compatible for an age where everybody is computing on their mobile devices but you know that doesn't mean that they can't that they can't the other business -- trying to solve. Complicated problems are related enterprises and governments so salute tonight and mobile is -- I -- I mean anybody yes they they have a whole they have a whole serves as. That business is no reason they can't grow a bit every year while the other one which was I think group. Declined by 7%. Over the past its history telling where Whitman's gonna station's gonna stay in the in the enterprise does what -- is gonna -- -- -- -- every error -- -- over one and -- CEO though she has to Qaeda. You see the Lawrence and yet exactly but it thanks Robin thanks -- coast as well we'll leave it says it will breaking news.
