Ford F-150 topped Cars.com's list of the most “American-Made” cars, but 7 of 10 brands cited were Japanese, a sign of continuing globalization, says Patrick Olsen, editor-in-chief at Cars.com.
The Ford F 150 pickup being out -- at Toyota Camry again as a most American made it vehicle and cars dot com's annual ranking. -- from Dearborn Michigan is part dot com editor in chief Patrick Apple's. Well Patrick first off -- what's what do you define as American me. Well so what we're looking for on any car -- truck is and for regime consumer confinement to stickers the final assembly point. And then also the percentage of domestic parts of the car. And then finally we use sales knowing that the more units of a car -- that are sold more auto workers were employed building that vehicle Patrick. What propelled the F 150 to beat Toyota again for the second year general. Well you know different -- remains very popular the F series line has been the most popular vehicle in this country for decades. But I think that because we've seen energy and housing come back that there's -- -- a strong demand for pickup trucks. I think that's the sales end of that of the three factors that were involved. Yet the Camry and the efforts of people have certainly 5% domestic parts and so for four to win that set higher -- higher sales volume. As for the Japanese can afford brands. Mainly Japanese -- did dominate make up about half. I'm here American made lists this year Japanese game played basically Toyota and Honda they took seven of the ten spots. What makes them dominate is that sales of their cars domestic content. Well you know what's interesting is I think you have to watch -- at what Honda particulars doing. They build more cars now in the US than they build in Japan so. They are trying to build the cars were they sell the cars and that means more plants here and more. More you know parts from local suppliers these wanna make sure that you've got that supply chain rebuild your cars. And you expect this trend of Japanese automakers continued. Well I think the trend overall for this all domestic parts has gunned down sort of ten cars are eligible for the list this year last year is fourteen. -- the year before that thirty the year before that so as auto -- become more global I think we're gonna see the domestic parts content continue to slide. All right but this trend of having Japanese auto makers dominate this list story getting bigger you expect this to continue. Well it's hard to say I think the issue is going to be in the same -- Toyota and Honda going for it as it is for the Detroit three which is that now they're -- global companies so they're getting parts from everywhere so. It's you know I really can't tell you what the future's gonna hold. That -- -- -- do you see the endless stream of recalls by GM we just had another one announced Friday night. Do you see that hurting the perception of American made cars overall. Or -- limited to traditional American branch that is the Big Three. Well it's it's been very excuse you know but there's a lot of buzz about recalls but we watched GM sells Ford sales. Chrysler Fiat sales. And really they haven't taken much of the depth so I think a lot of consumers are looking at this as a past problem and not -- all the while. At the pass.
