April 13 - A fire that ripped through the Chilean port city of Valparaiso leaves at least 11 killed, and some 500 homes destroyed. Gavino Garay reports.
A smokey nightmare in the Chilean port city Valparaiso -- now under an official state of emergency. At least 11 people were killed, and some 500 houses destroyed when a fire rampaged through forests and hilly residential neighborhoods. It's left residents desperate for more help. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN RESIDENT SAYING: "The firemen need to come back, there are still flames that need to be put out." Chilean President Michelle Bachelet: (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) CHILEAN PRESIDENT MICHELLE BACHELET, SAYING: "The images have an impact. It's a tremendous tragedy, possibly the worst fire in the history of Valparaiso and everyone knows very well the impact this is having on the lives of so many, and all of the city. At this time, we know that 11 people have died. This is the number that we have and that has been confirmed up to this point, but we know that in the next crucial hours this figure could increase." And the fire is still burning in parts of the city.. Those who escaped the inferno return to their homes, reduced to piles of ash.
