Nov 11 - The world's largest shoe shop has gone a step further than many of its competitors as the footwear industry globally continues to grow. As Hayley Platt reports the Level Shoe District in Dubai is now offering shoes made of 24-carat gold.
It's already the world's biggest shoe shop, stocking over 15,000 styles and 300 brands. Now the 'Level Shoe District' in Dubai has gone a step further. Rania Masri is from the Chalhoub Group. The 24-carat gold shoes are made by Alberto Moretti and cost between $4,000 - $4,800. But Masri doesn't think that will be a problem for her clients. High-end brands, especially shoes are in demand. So we want to offer those who are obsessed with shoes, something they can't find anywhere else in the world." Worldwide shoe sales have grown from $15 billion to $17 billion in the past year. And the Middle East is one of the biggest buying regions largely because traditional dress restricts clothing options. Last year consumers there spent $2 billion dollars on luxury goods - 20 percent of that was on shoes. And it's not only women who are after a bit of bling. These crystal encrusted loafers are from Paris-based designers Louis Leeman and Erica Pelosini. These shoes fit that category - they're made by the world renowned Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid. They're not made of gold but it seems there are plenty of newcomers attempting to give the likes of Jimmy Choo a run for their money.
