July 19 - Amateur video appears to show armed rebel fighters taking control of a government military site in Deraa, Syria. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
Rebel fighters appear to close in on a government military site in Deraa. The Southwestern city in Syria is seen as the birth place of the revolt in Syria. The country is now entrenched in a brutal civil war that activists say has killed more than 100,000 people. The video, which could not be independently verified by reuters comes a day after British sources told Reuters that authorities say President Bashar al-Assad might survive in office for years. Russia, Assad's most powerful foreign backer - and the United States want peace talks in Geneva to try to agree a ceasefire and the makeup of a transitional government. But sources say the initiative has stalled and there is now talk it may never happen. On the ground there are celebrations as rebel forces appear to claim a government tank -- it's a victory for their side in what is now a 28-month conflict.
