July 14 - Video uploaded to the internet purportedly shows shelling in the Syrian town of Homs and air strikes on the outskirts of the capital Damascus. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
No sign of relief as the central Syrian city of Homs faces another day of bombardment. The video, which could not be independently verified by Reuters, shows heavily damaged buildings as smoke clings to the air. A man's voice can be heard saying "This is Homs, the capital of the revolution, they are destroying it." Government forces have waged a relentless campaign in Homs -- ignoring pleas from the International Red Cross to let them in to deliver supplies to residents caught in the cross fire. Thick clouds of smoke -on the horizon on the outskirts of Damascus -something that is becoming the norm in parts of the war-ravaged country. More footage shows the aftermath of a strike in a suburb of the capital city -- it's a place where there are few places left to hide. Smoke and panic fill the streets as residents look for survivors. More than 100,000 people have already died in the conflict which began with peaceful protests more than two years ago. A man faces the camera cursing Syrian President Bashar al Assad. On the ground, comfort in the debris of war as world powers remain deadlocked on finding a solution to the crisis.
