June 24 - An Australian start-up called Ninja Blocks is making waves in the tech world with a device that connects the physical world with the internet. The Ninja Block box will monitor sensors connected around the home and follow pre-programmed instructions when changes are detected. Rob Muir reports.
The Ninja Block is a computer designed to monitor and report changes in the physical environment. Developer, Marcus Schappi says it has mutliple applications. (SOUNDBITE) MARCUS SCHAPPI, CO-FOUNDER AND CEO OF NINJA BLOCK SAYING: "I personally use it to protect my chickens. I set up a series of motion sensors outside my chicken coop at home and whenever motion is detected it takes a photo with a little camera and emails me that photo. A few months ago I picked up a fox trying to eat my chickens and it allowed me to quickly get out there and shoo away the fox." But the Ninja Block can also be applied indoors, remotely connecting any wifi enabled gadget to a smartphone. (SOUNDBITE) MARCUS SCHAPPI, CO-FOUNDER AND CEO OF NINJA BLOCK SAYING: "It slowly picks up the connected devices that are in your home network, be it lights, be it Wi-Fi enabled sockets and switches. And those connections can be pre-programmed, giving the Ninja Block control over temperature, humidity and and household appliances the homeowner chooses. Schappi calls it a platform that creates an internent of the physical world.
