May 14 - Nokia unveils a metal smartphone as the latest addition to its Lumia lineup - the company's second new phone in a week - as it continues to play catch up with Samsung and Apple in the lucrative handset market. Ivor Bennett reports.
Lighter, slimmer, and this time, metallic. Meet the Lumia 925 - Nokia's new flagship smartphone. The Finnish firm's playing catch up with industry giants Apple and Samsung. Martin Garner from CCS Insight thinks the new phone may give them a chance. SOUNDBITE (English) MARTIN GARNER, MOBILE INDUSTRY ANALYST, CCS INSIGHT, SAYING: "First impressions are that it is very strong on some areas and should appeal to the sorts of demographics who might just be getting tired of the iPhone and to some extent the Android. The Lumia 925 is the first smartphone ever with a 6-element lens. Most phones have 5. By adding another, it further corrects any wobble or distortion, allowing the camera to work in both extreme light...and dark. The screen's new too - Nokia's Craig Leese says it has a higher resolution and increased sensitivity. SOUNDBITE (English) CRAIG LEESE, NOKIA, SAYING: "It just reacts to anything. and even if you're wearing a glove. or any material. Just take my jacket, it's so sensitive." But the former market leader's got a lot of ground to catch up. Smartphone shipments were below 6 million in Q1, compared to 70 million for Samsung. Nokia's persevering with Windows for now, but it's not pinning hopes on just one phone. This was its second launch in less than a week - following hot on the heels of the Lumia 928. At 99 dollars it's one of the cheapest smartphone on the market. The company also released a 20 dollar handset earlier this year, as it aims to compete at every price range. Daniel Gleeson from IHS. SOUNDBITE (English) DANIEL GLEESON, MOBILE INDUSTRY ANALYST, IHS, SAYING: "To me it's more about generating constant buzz for Nokia, about reminding consumers that Nokia's still around, they're producing new, very attractive handsets on a constant basis. They don't have the sort of brand clout that now the S4 has or the new iPhone has, where they can stay with a single release per year." The 925 is primarily aimed at Europe, and will be sold in China too. But at just over 600 dollars, it doesn't come cheap.
