Road and air traffic networks in Tokyo slowed significantly on Tuesday (January 15) after record snow a day earlier surprised the city. About 31 domestic flights to and from Haneda airport were cancelled due to the conditions, local media reported. Parts of the metropolitan highway which services Tokyo were closed with teams shovelling snow to clear the entrances. Commuters were also extra cautious not to slip during their morning commute. About 119 people were hurt due to the snow in Tokyo and over 5000 road accidents in and around Tokyo have occurred, NHK said. People cleared snow and ice from the front of shops, offices and homes on Tuesday morning. Traffic jams on the metropolitan expressway stretch over 40 kilometres, local media said.
