Dec. 22 - Heavy bombardment in the suburbs of Damascus and Homs as the fighting goes on in Syria in a war that Russia now calls a stalemate. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
Government forces target a building on the outskirts of Damascus in a war that Russia is now calling a stalemate. Large plumes of black smoke are becoming part of the skyline in many parts of the country. Amateur video which could not be independently verified by Reuters shows the Capitols suburb's becoming combat zones. In Homs residents walk through battered streets. Buildings now shells of what they once were. Russia's foreign minister now says no one is going to win this war. A woman cries out in the street. She is looking for her sister. There is no more comfort. For others it is already over, as citizens search for bodies in the rubble. Western powers and some Arab nations continue to call for President Bashar al-Assad to step down -- but he is not giving up the fight in a conflict that has already cost more than 44,000 lives.
