July 18 - The revolt against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad pushes towards the heart of government control, as clashes in Damascus rage for a fourth day. Travis Brecher reports.
Gunfire in Syria's capital Damascus. This amateur video purports to show clashes between rebels and government forces, as the violence continues for a fourth day - marking the fiercest fighting in the capital since the revolt against President Bashar al-Assad began in March last year. Reuters can't independently verify the video, mostly due to restrictions on journalists in Syria. Activists said an army barracks came under rebel fire around 7:30 am -- not far from Assad's "Palace of the People". This video footage broadcast by activists purportedly shows fire in the barracks overnight as a result of an earlier mortar attack, although residents reported hearing no explosions. Rebel fighters have called the intensified attacks in recent days the battle "for the liberation of Damascus". Travis Brecher, Reuters
