July 16 - Videos uploaded to the internet purportedly show clashes between rebels and government forces in various parts of the Syrian capital. Travis Brecher reports.
The crackle of small arms fire echoes through the streets of the Syrian capital, Damascus. According to activists, violent clashes between rebels and government forces continued for a second day, forcing hundreds to flee the fighting. Syrian troops backed by armoured vehicles were said to have advanced through the city centre, driving out rebels who had secured a foothold within striking distance of major state installations. Video uploaded to a social media website was said to record the fighting in several Damascus neighbourhoods. The latest fighting would be the biggest armoured deployment in Damascus since the beginning of the 17-month-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. Reuters can't independently verify the content of this footage, largely due to severe restrictions on foreign media in Syria. Travis Brecher, Reuters
