Jan 29 - Amateur video posted on the internet purports to show Syrian army activity in Damascus and its surroundings as unrest start to spread to the capital. Jessica Gray reports.
A small group of Syrian protesters, flanked by men armed with guns, shout angrily. Amateur video that could not be verified by Reuters shows rebels allegedly from the Syria Free Army protecting anti-government demonstrators. Another video shows military activity in the eastern part of Syria. Earlier on Saturday, more footage uploaded to a social media website shows gunfire and fighting in the capital Damascus. President Bashar al-Assad's bloody crackdown on rebel factions and demonstrators has drawn criticism from Syria's neighbors. The Arab League sent monitors into the country to help broker a peace deal. But mounting violence forced the Arab League to suspended the operation Saturday. The United Nations estimates more than 5,000 have died in the unrest since March. Jessica Gray, Reuters
