About 100 people, most of them students, staged a protest during a ceremony marking the birthday of a Chilean independence hero on Saturday. More than a dozen protestors were arrested after the clashes in Chillan, 400 kilometres south of Santiago. The annual ceremony marking the birth of Bernardo O'Higgins, considered one of Chile's founding fathers, was attended by President Sebastian Pinera. The students said hundreds were expected to take part in a further demonstration on Sunday (August 21).
