AUG 17 - Violence continues in the Syrian city of Latakia after reports the government withdraws troops after what it claims was a successful mission. Lily Grimes reports.

State TV says the government of President Bashar al-Assad is withdrawing troops after a successful mission against so-called armed terrorists in the al-Raml neighbourhood. According to residents hundreds have been arrested and taken to a stadium after a four-day tank assault aimed at crushing anti-government protests. Activists say at least 36 people have been killed. Video posted on a social media website claims to show state security forces attacking a Palestinian refugee camp in the city. Reuters cannot independently verify the content of this footage.
