Aug. 9 - Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu arrives in Syria to urge President Bashar al-Assad to halt military assault on protesters. Lily Grimes reports.
Turkey's foreign minister arrives in Syria with a message for the president. Ahmet Davutoglu is here to meet Bashar al-Assad and urge him to stop the bloodshed. Turkey has close ties with President Assad but Ankara is alarmed at the spiralling death toll in neighbouring Syria. Human rights groups say at least 1,600 civilians have been killed here in the last five months. The Turkish government describes the Syrian uprising as a domestic issue concerning Ankara because of their shared border. In June more than 10,000 Syrians fled to Turkey to escape attacks by security forces. Lily Grimes, Reuters
