June 11 - Amateur video captures a helicopter hovering over Syrian protesters after reports of air power used for the first time to disperse them.
(ROUGH CUT ONLY - NO REPORTER NARRATION) Video posted on a social media website purportedly shows a Syrian helicopter gunship flying above protesters in Maarat al-Numaan. The footage has not been independently verified. But it's emerged after witnesses reported helicopters opening fire with machine guns to scatter anti-government protesters. If confirmed it would be the first reported use of air power in the crackdown on unrest in Syria's increasingly bloody three-month uprising. The gunships were reportedly used during Friday's day of nationwide rallies against President Bashar al-Assad. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the choppers opened fire in Maarat al-Numaan after security forces on the ground killed five protesters. Syrian state tv didn't mention attack helicopters but said the crew of an air ambulance was injured when it came under fire from what it called terrorist armed groups.
