June 4, 2011 - Demonstrators calling for the ouster of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Julie Noce, Reports.
EDIT CONTAINS 4:3 MATERIAL Across Syria on Friday thousands of people marched through towns and cities calling for President Bashar al-Assad to step down. The unverified footage posted on a social media website shows protesters carrying an enormous Syrian flag, chanting "we want to overthrow the regime". Elsewhere reports emerged that 34 demonstrators were shot dead in Hama in one of the bloodiest crackdowns during the 11-week revolt. Activists say government security forces have killed more than one thousand civilians so far. President Assad says the violence is the result of Islamist groups who fire on civilians and government forces alike. Analysts say although demonstrators are undeterred by stepped up security, protests have not yet reached the scale that would bring down the regime. Julie Noce, Reuters
