While far from perfect, the elections were deemed a success in a nation that had known virtually nothing but military rule and rigged votes for the past half-century. . SOUNDBITE: Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, saying (English): "I, Goodluck Jonathan do solemnly swear that I will be faithful and bear allegiance to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and I will preserve , protect and defend the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, so help me God. The polls threw religious and ethnic fault lines into sharp relief . Jonathan, a Christian from the south, swept to victory in his home region while his rival performed strongly in the mostly Muslim north.
