Nicolas Sarkozy's father spills the beans. A German newspaper has quoted Pal Sarkozy as saying the French president's wife Carla Bruni was expecting a child. Speculation has been widespread in recent weeks that the 43-year-old model-turned-singer was pregnant. During an appearance on a French TV show Bruni played it coy when the reporter congratulated her. (SOUNDBITE) Reporter, saying (French): "I know you hate discussing your private life, but I simply want to congratulate you." (SOUNDBITE) French First Lady Carla Bruni, saying (French): "And I congratulate you too." Sarkozy is the most unpopular French leader in decades and could enjoy a lift to his ratings from a presidential birth. Some Parisians welcomed the news. SOUNDBITE: Geraldine, Parisian, saying (French): "New babies are always good news, it brings a bit of joy in this time of sordid and glum news. I'm not that touched about it, she's very present in the media, good for her, it's good news." While others thought the announcement comes at a convenient time, with less than a year before the presidential election. SOUNDBITE: Parisian, saying (French): "I think it was calculated for a new (presidential) mandate but I'm not into politics."
