U.S. President Barack Obama makes startling announcement late Sunday night: Osama Bin Laden is dead.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING:
"Good evening. Tonight I can report the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda and a terrorist who is responsible for the murder of thousands of men, women and children."
After a series of intelligence tip-offs, the US secured the location of Bin Laden inside a compound in Pakistan, and took action against him, Obama said.
10 years ago, Osama Bin Laden's al Qaeda terrorist network carried out successful attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in the U.S. killing nearly 3-thousand people.
His capture and death are a poignant marker of that anniversary.
In Bin Laden's capture, Obama's national security team has accomplished what the Bush administration could not.
